• 2020: a Mixed Year for Mountain Rescue

Annual figures tell a mixed story across Mountain Rescue in England and Wales.

Statistics from Mountain Rescue England and Wales (MREW), the umbrella organisation for Mountain Rescue teams across England and Wales, tell a mixed story for 2020. Overall, call out numbers for the year are remarkably consistent with 3,080 call outs in 2020 compared with 2,973 in 2019, a relatively small increase of 107 (under 4%).  read more ...

• The Fell Top Assessors are Back

The Fell Top Assessors are back for another season bringing you daily reports on conditions in the high fells.

At the start of this week the Lake District National Park Authority's Fell Top Assessor team returned for the 2020 winter season. They might just have one of the most socially distanced roles in the UK. Long before this year's coronavirus pandemic the Fell Top Assessors have been used to working in solitary conditions to keep walkers safe on the fells.  read more ...


• Camping in the Lake District

Everyone want to come and camp in the Lake District at the moment so here's some advice to help you if you're planning to come.

Now that Covid-19 is under some sort of control and people can take holidays in the UK we are getting a lot of people heading here to camp. So camp sites are getting full. In addition people are irresponsibly wild camping and leaving a mess behind including whole tents, bags, rubbish and ... sadly ... poo.  read more ...

• The Keswick to Threlkeld Path Tunnel

The path from Keswick to Threlkeld along the old railway line is currently being restored after Storm Desmond. As part of that a long closed tunnel is being re-opened.

Back in December 2015 Storm Desmond did significant damage all over the Lake District and for us one of the big losses the destruction of two of the bridges over the River Greta on the path from Keswick to Threlkeld along the old railway line which resulted in the temporary loss and the later diversion of one our earliest walks.  read more ...
