My 'big walk' of our 2024 Summer hols. Having ticked off low pike and high pike some years ago I planned a route to cover off the rest of the fairfield horseshoe, doing a point to point from Brothers Water to Rydal Water where my wife and daughter would meet me having been swimming.

Started with a lovely morning walk along Brothers Water with Hartsop Dodd beautifully reflected. High Hartsop Dodd however was not a gentle introduction with an added little scramble up the knott at the top.

Continued on to Little Hart Crag and then Dove Crag where the views over to the Central Fells emerged as well as Windermere and Coniston

A short descent and then an unexpected clamber over some large rocks up on to Hart Crag where I stopped for lunch.

From here it was an easy stroll over to Fairfield and then down to Great Rigg. Great Rigg was probably the highlight with views into the Rydal Valley and no fewer than 4 lakes beyond (Windermere, Esthwaite Water, Coniston and Grasmere)

Onwards now to Heron Pike and Nab Scar (where I might have missed the top given that I was beyond my ETA at Rydal Water and still quite high up!). The descent from Nab Scar was very warm, steep and seemingly endless.

A great day out but quite tough, the only 'flat' bit was along Rydal Fell, even the descents seemed to involve a bit of climbing!
